In December 2018 we made our first trip to Koma Hills, Nigeria. During this trip, we built a water well which will benefit over 2000 people who did not have access to clean drinking water.

There is currently a population of 55,000 who live in this mountainous region. Many people here are indigenous tribes who often suffer from the rampant spread of waterborne diseases. Now, significant decreases in infection and death rates were directly attributed to constructing a simple water well.

“When the team arrived in Nigeria, we were overwhelmed by all we had experienced. The level of poverty was something that not many of the team had ever been exposed to. When we made the 6-hour trip to Koma Hills from Yola, we thought we were going to make a difference in the lives of the people who live there, but in reality, they made a difference in our lives.'“

“We were impacted by their sense of community, generous hosting practises, and gratitude for their limited resources, but more importantly, how they served one another. We fell in love with Koma.”

We stayed in Koma for five days and four nights. The team learnt to adapt to the new surroundings and, at times, were pushed out of their comfort zones, but nobody complained or moaned. Instead, the team said over and over again, “I can’t believe I get to do this”, “All I want to do is help change people’s lives”, and “ I have found my purpose”. With that and all our conversations, we knew we had to change the emphasis of charity from only building wells to wanting every human to live a better tomorrow: with purpose and without poverty.
