What is it?
WellWater is extremely excited to be building a school in the Koma Hills, Nigeria to ensure that all children have access to an education.
Education in the UK is second nature, something that the majority of us do, and it certainly helps set us up for life! For the young people in Koma Hills they don’t have this luxury, and have struggled to have proper access to education. This is namely due to the fact they have no government assistance and due to the weather conditions previous schools have fallen down. As a result of this the young people lack opportunity and are often forced as young teenagers to marry early which further adds to perpetual paralysis of hopes for an education.
We want to ensure that all children in Koma Hills have the chance to education all year round and because of this we are ensuring that we will not only build an education centre equipped with chairs, tables, school equipment but we will be implementing a sustainable model for the community develop and grow with.
Who will this benefit?
With 50,000 people living here and over half of them being children it is so important that we do more to make sure that individuals have the best life chance. However, we are even more excited about this project because not only will the young people benefit but adults will too, helping climate change and helping future generations.
Here are just a few ways the community will benefit:
To fight climate change using natural materials and by implementing lighting and ventilation which won’t require any form of electrical power
To encourage self-education, making the library the centre of the school
To help the Koma children to access higher education by providing a computer room powered by solar panels
To teach the communities self-build construction methods
To let the school be a catalyst for economic grow.
How much money do we need? How much do we have?
So far we have achieved £17,000 of the £40,000 needed for this project.
When is the school being built?
We are planning to begin building in November 2020.
